Nathan Pennie 🇺🇸

Nathan Pennie was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts, where he spent his childhood skiing in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. He decided to leave his East Coast life behind to pursue a Physics degree at the University of British Columbia. In addition to his coursework, Nathan has held several internships where he gained hands-on experience in research. At UBC, he worked with Dr. Yan Alexander Wang developing density functional theory approaches to quantum chemistry. In Detroit, Nathan worked with Dr. Caisheng Wang at Wayne State University where he helped develop power electronics and electric vehicle drive systems. Nathan's passion for hands-on work and his strong interest in the environment led him to join the NBD group as a volunteer, where he played a significant role in developing the Thermal Desorption (TD) system. After a trip to the UK to attend the CIMS meeting and install the TD system on the CARES cruise, Nathan joined the NBD group full time. In addition to his research, Nathan is an avid outdoorsman. When he's not in the lab, Nathan can be found on the slopes, in the air, or on the water. In addition to being a member of the UBC Alpine Ski Team, he is an active member of the UBC Sailing Club and is working towards obtaining his private pilot's license. He is also a dedicated volunteer at OWL Rehab, where he helps injured birds of prey.
